The Executive Order That Could End Van Life (Or Change It Forever)
The Executive Order That Could End Van Life (Or Change It Forever)
This is the dream. Freedom. The open road. For thousands, living out of a vehicle is a choice, a lifestyle Van Life. But a new Executive Order signed in July 2025 by President Donald Trump is threatening to redefine what it means to be a "nomad" in America. It wasn't written about van lifers, but it could hit them the hardest.
The order is called “Ending Crime and Disorder on America’s Streets.” Its stated goal is to tackle homelessness by shifting away from "Housing First" to an approach focused on enforcement, mandatory treatment, and public order.
How does the federal government enforce this? By prioritizing grants for states and cities that crack down on urban camping, loitering, and public drug use.
This puts immense pressure on local governments to pass and enforce stricter laws—laws that don't distinguish between a temporary tent, a beat-up car, or a high-end adventure van.
The biggest threat to vehicular residents is criminalization of survival.
As cities tighten regulations to get federal money, you will likely see a massive increase in fines, tickets, and vehicle impoundments for:
- Overnight Parking: Laws that ban sleeping in vehicles will be strictly enforced in more places.
- Loitering/Camping: Any sign that you are 'living' on public land even just a bicycle or solar panel outside your van becomes a target.
For law enforcement, the line between a digital nomad and a person forced into their car by poverty is functionally invisible.
Both are committing the same violation: unsheltered residency.
The order also encourages data sharing between federal agencies and local law enforcement.
This raises serious concerns about creating a centralized federal database of individuals identified as 'unhoused.' Once you're tracked, that record can follow you, potentially affecting everything from background checks to family services.
For those who chose the road for privacy and to live off-grid, this policy is an unprecedented step toward surveillance and loss of anonymity.
This executive order won't stop van life, but it will make it harder, riskier, and more expensive. The need to organize and advocate for vehicular rights and safe parking policies has never been more urgent. Stay informed. Know your local laws. The road ahead just got steeper.
